Portmahomack to Golspie

There was no rush to leave Portmahomack on Monday morning as unlike the rest of the UK that was experiencing a heat wave it was rainy. After a very leisurely morning with a wet dog walk along the coastal path we set off to the Glenmorangie Distillery as it was perfect weather for an indoor pastime. I can highly recommend the tour. It is £7 per person and that includes a dram at the end. Unfortunately as Andy was driving and the drink driving limit is very low in Scotland I had two wee drams at the end. So he didn’t miss out completely though he did buy himself a taster pack to sample in the camper.

The sun was shining when we came out for the drive along the A9 following the coast. Durnoch is a pretty town and nice for an amble around. Next stop for us was Dunrobin Castle, just up the coast after the village of Golspie. I would highly recommend the castle for a visit. The grounds and rooms are spectacular and the falconry show that is on twice a day at 11am and 2pm is well worth trying to catch, just remember to duck! The castle is £11 per adult and is the home of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland, open from April to mid October. The earliest part of the castle dates from around 1275 with many extensions and alterations and looks very much like a French Chateau.
While I went round the castle Andy did a walk around the grounds and along beach which Finn definitely enjoyed.

Just near the exit road to the castle there is a road that heads up into the hills to the waterfalls in the Glen. We headed up there and decided to stop the night in the car park on the right hand side as you go up. There are amazing views out to sea and you can see the top of one of the castle turrets. We walked down to the village via the waterfalls for an evening drink before heading back to the camper and Andy had an evening sampling his whiskeys.
As the evening went on we did encounter one problem with our overnight stop – midges!!! lots of them.
